Congratulations to SAGE Board Member, Pat Lucia, PhD, PE, GE, on his election to the Academy of Distinguished Alumni for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEE) at UC Berkeley.
Dr. Lucia has had an exceptional career as a consulting geotechnical and environmental engineer. Retired from Geosyntec Consultants since 2012, where he served as Principal for nearly 20 years, Dr. Lucia managed the firm’s Oakland office, and served as Board Chairman for more than a decade. Prior to Geosyntec, Dr. Lucia was a Principal at another San Francisco Bay Area firm, and served in the US Army Corps of Engineers from 1966 to 1969.
Since his retirement, Dr. Lucia has been an adjunct professor at the University of California, Davis where he teaches advanced soil mechanics and a course on professional practice. He also serves as the advisor to the UC Davis Geotechnical Graduate Student Society, and serves on the Board of Directors for SAGE.
One of the most accomplished and respected consulting geotechnical engineers in California, Dr. Lucia is recognized for his practice expertise and experience in several areas including: (i) stability of natural hillside slopes and constructed embankments, dams, and levees; and (ii) environmental remediation and clean-up of contaminated sites. He has long been a leader in identifying the risk management challenges faced by geotechnical engineers who provide recommendations and designs for underground construction. In this regard, while at UC Davis, he recently completed the most comprehensive geotechnical risk management study ever undertaken, evaluating more than 1500 claims against geotechnical engineers. The study identified the greatest areas of risk to geotechnical engineers and recommended changes in the Standard of Care in geotechnical practice to mitigate those risks.
The Academy of Distinguished Alumni honors the outstanding professional accomplishments and contributions of CEE alumni, including service to the CEE Department, to engage outstanding alumni in the activities of the Department, increase the visibility of the Department to all alumni, present Academy members to students as examples of successful CEE graduates and possible role models for the students’ own careers; and to further enhance the stature of the Cal CEE Department by shining a light on the many great accomplishments of its graduates.
