Founded in 1997, the one-time family owned and operated consulting firm, Sanders and Associates Geostructural Engineers (SAGE for short) was born out of a long family tradition of being independent business owners and operators. Before venturing out on his own, SAGE President, Steve Sanders, spent his early years in the A&E industry as a geotechnical engineer designing earth retaining structures and landslide stabilization systems.
During its initial years, SAGE employed between 4-10 professionals and focused its efforts on earth retention structures and foundation designs. Clients consisted mostly of contractors, large civil firms, and developers who had a stake in the development of regional landmarks such as the Roseville Galleria and the Red Hawk Casino.
Hiring a seasoned geologist and geotechnical engineer from the Bay Area in 2004 served as a catalyst for SAGE diversifying beyond earth retention-focused projects and moving into the water resources market. This proved to be a pivotal decision for SAGE, as the company not only survived the Great Recession between 2007 and 2009, but experienced growth too.
In 2012, SAGE began executing on a plan to strengthen its foothold in the engineering consulting industry by expanding the types of services offered, opening additional offices in geographically strategic locations, and hiring several new and marquis employees. Along the way the company shed its 42 letter name, opting instead for the simple acronym, SAGE (Engineers, Inc.).
Fast forward to 2019 and the company no longer resembles its humble beginnings in a rented 800 sq. ft. office space behind an auto repair shop. Today SAGE is a regionally known and respected firm providing many services under the water resources umbrella, as well as world-class technical expertise for projects around the globe. With multiple offices in California, the company is solely owned and employs over 50 professionals. The growth and success of SAGE is a direct result of the commitment, hard work, and technical excellence of its dedicated employees.
